Accessibility

Many of our customers have been coming to us for twenty-five years, and plenty of them read a screen the way they read the menu in the shop: with their glasses on. This site was built for that from the start, rather than adapted for it afterwards.

The standard we build to

Our target is WCAG 2.2, Level AA, on every page of this site.

How we check

Every page is scanned automatically with axe, a widely used open-source accessibility checker, in both the light and the dark colour scheme, on every single change, and any failure is fixed before the next release.

Automated checks catch a great deal, but not everything: no tool can say whether a description is genuinely useful or whether the order of things makes sense. The automatic scan also runs in the site's default theme, so the other two themes rest on the same colour contract rather than on a scan of their own. And we have not yet had an independent audit, so we do not claim conformance. We claim the target above, the checks below it, and a phone number with a person at the end of it.

What is built in

  • Body text never drops below 17px, and a text-size setting scales the whole site up by 12.5% or 25% without breaking the layout.
  • Buttons and links are at least 44px across, so tapping one does not ask for a steady hand.
  • Three themes: Tricolore, Classique, Minimal, each in light, dark, or whatever your device is set to. Their colours are chosen so that every text-and-background pairing meets the AA contrast minimum, and a separate high-contrast setting strengthens borders further.
  • A more readable font option, Easier-to-read font, switches the whole site to Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface drawn specifically to make similar-looking letters easier to tell apart.
  • Reduce Motion removes every animation and transition, and your operating system's own reduced-motion setting is honoured automatically, without you having to ask twice.
  • Everything works from the keyboard alone. A skip link jumps straight to the main content, the focus outline is always visible, and nothing traps you, including the cookie notice, which you can tab straight past.
  • Zooming is never blocked, and every page works down to a screen 375px wide.
  • The site is published in English, Français, Español.
  • Your choices are remembered in this browser and applied before the page is drawn, so nothing flashes at you on the way in.

Where the settings are

All of it lives behind the Preferences button in the header, on every page.

What we know is not right yet

  • Our café menu lists every item by its own name, and those names and their descriptions are in English even on the French and Spanish pages. The page around them is translated; the items themselves are not, yet. Café Menu
  • Ordering itself happens on the website of our ordering partner, Brygid, which we do not build and cannot fix. If it does not work for you, call us and we will take the order ourselves. That is not a lesser option; it is how many of our regulars order.
  • Our Find Us page embeds a Google map that we do not control. The same page also gives the address, a directions link and the phone number as plain text.
  • We have not yet commissioned an independent accessibility audit; what is written here describes what the code actually does.

Tell us when something does not work

If any part of this site gets in your way, tell us which page and what happened. We will do our best to put it right, and while we do, we can help you get what you needed another way.
